This recipe is a healthier take on an original Orange Julius. When I was a kid, getting an icy cold Orange Julius at the mall was such a wonderful treat. I also have memories of making a homemade version with my mom. I can recall there being a can of frozen orange concentrate, a banana, vanilla, ice cubes and a 1/2 cup of white sugar! No wonder I loved it. Not sure how my mom handled us bouncing off the walls after drinking it though. White sugar makes me cringe now and I don’t keep any in the house. I recently went online to look up the actual ingredients of an Orange Julius and there’s some really disturbing stuff in it. After reading the list below, I definitely will be avoiding them! Check it out…
INGREDIENTS (Orange Julius Original):
Flavor Enhancer: Modified Whey Solids, Maltodextrin, Egg White Solids, Sugar, Karaya Gum, Natural & Artificial Flavors, Corn Syrup Solids, Guar Gum, Modified Food Starch, Dipotassium Phosphate, Xanthan Gum, Standardized with Dextrose.
Orange Juice Concentrated: Frozen concentrated orange juice.
Sweetener: High fructose corn syrup, water, citric acid, sodium benzoate.
This would definitely cause a bad reaction in my youngest son, Lucas, due to the milk products, egg whites, artificial flavours, and preservatives. But never mind those, did you see that high fructose corn syrup is listed in there too!
Instead of consuming those hard to digest ingredients, I’m sharing an easy recipe for a delicious and nutritious orange smoothie. I created this smoothie for my oldest son, Mattias, who loves his oranges, even his favourite colour is orange! I’ve included hemp hearts because of their high nutritional content. If you aren’t familiar with hemp hearts they are a powerful easy to digest seed containing the essential fatty acids omega 6 and omega 3. They are a complete protein, a good source of fiber, and packed with vitamins A, B1, B2, D and E, as well as the minerals calcium and iron. Lucas gets most his healthy fats and protein from these amazing seeds!
With a few simple ingredients thrown into a high speed blender you can have this smoothie ready in just a few mins.
This orange smoothie mixture also makes great popsicles. Simply pour the mixture into popsicle moulds and place in the freezer for a cold treat on a hot day. The kids love it and I love knowing the clean nutrients they are consuming.

- ¼ cup Hemp Hearts
