A friend of mine had a baby recently and told me she needs quick easy snack or meal ideas that will provide her with an energy boost after a sleepless night. I told her about this Banana Matcha Smoothie that I make after a sleepless night from being woken up by one of my boys. This creamy and rich tasting smoothie will keep you energized throughout the day, and is the perfect morning or afternoon drink. It’s a powerful combination of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, amino acids, complex carbs, and healthy fats. There’s so much good stuff in this glass and it’s one of my favourite smoothies! Here’s a breakdown of all the wonderful benefits in this smoothie combination:
Green Matcha Powder – Matcha is an effective energy booster that promotes concentration and clarity of mind without any of the nervous energy found in coffee. It increase metabolism and helps burn fat, without raising blood pressure or heart rate. The chlorophyll in matcha is a powerful detoxifier and safely eliminates chemicals and heavy metals from the body. You would have to drink ten cups of green tea to match the potency of 1 serving of matcha.
Hemp Hearts – They may be tiny but they are mighty! These tiny raw shelled hemp seeds are a great addition to the smoothie, adding 10 grams of complete protein, 10 grams of essential fatty acid omegas, and 3 grams of fibre!
Chia Seeds – Although chia seeds contain omega 3 & 6, similar to hemp hearts, I’ve included it into this recipe because they form a bulky gel, absorbing ten times their weight in liquid. This makes you feel full longer and the seeds slow down how fast our bodies convert carbohydrates into simple sugars, which helps control blood sugar levels. As well they add calcium and iron to the smoothie, along with trace amounts of magnesium, potassium, vitamin A, vitamin B-12, thiamine and folate.
Rolled Oats – The body digests and absorbs oats slowly, keeping you feeling full, controlling your appetite. Oats also support healthy digestion, as the insoluble fibre in oats scrub through the intestines, which helps move food along preventing constipation. Oats are a great source of manganese, a mineral that helps over 300 enzymes in your body. For gluten sensitivity, make sure to get GF oats that are certified from a gluten free factory. Also get slow oats, not quick oats, as they are less processed.
Bananas – A good source of vitamin B6, potassium, manganese, vitamin C, dietary fibre, biotin and copper. In just one banana there is 467mg of potassium, providing powerful protection to the cardiovascular system. The vitamin B6 in bananas helps protect against sleeplessness, mood swings and irritability. I included a banana for all the nutritional benefits, but also because a frozen banana adds such a rich creamy texture and a natural sweetness to smoothies.
Medjool Dates – A healthy source of vitamins and nutrients that contains natural sugar. They also have high levels of beneficial plant compounds called polyphenols, a very powerful antioxidant. The medjool date adds to the sweetness in the smoothie without using unnatural or processed sugars.
You’ll get long lasting energy for a busy day ahead, or enjoy as an afternoon snack to keep you going until dinner. Whatever time of the day you drink it, enjoy and smile, you just drank a nutrient loaded combination. Cheers!
